Improvisation and Contact Improvisation workshop with Charlie Morrissey (UK)

“Making ourselves up as we go along..”

November 4th & 5th      Hours: 10:00-16:00

The workshop concerns dancers, actors and amateurs with experience in movement/ improvisation who are interested in deepening their exploration in the performance art of improvisation.

This workshop plays with different ways of imagining and experiencing the body in relation to its interior, to other bodies, and to space and environment.

We will explore the body as substance, structure, and as a perceptual and imaginative proposition – one which we are actively inventing as we go along.

The workshop focuses on the body as a mass of molecules in relation to the physical forces exerted upon it from within and without; and the body as a constantly shifting perceptual experience set into motion by the imagination.

These different ways of contextualizing the body will be playfully explored through practical exercises and improvisational scores, working solo, with a partner and ensemble.

Contact Improvisation/Somatics/Contemplative Movement workshop with Christina Klissiouni

Sat. Sun 30/9 & 1/10, 2017    Hours: 10:00-18:00

“Breathing changes, embodied connections”

The theme of this weekend intensive CI workshop proposes an exploration on the means to develop meaningful physical dialogues using our physical and emotional intelligence as well as our instinctual self. As we develop our CI skills through somatic practices, we focus on mindfulness, presence, the healing aspect of touch that connects us with our creative spirit in dancing dialogues.

To whom it may concern:
CI technique/skills in combination with experiential contemplative work offer the ground for beginners in contact/dance to discover possibilities in their expression and dialogues in relation to the other/s, making sense of their movement through “simple, basic” exercises focusing on the principles of CI. Experienced contacters are invited to deepen their practice and give a new dimension to their approach in CI touching various states of presence in their dance, taking risks on other levels of their being.
All levels.

Our work supports physical expression and communication based on self-awareness; we study non-identification in the movement that paradoxically defines us at the same time. We witness ourselves in continuous changing that is happening inside as well as outside. We practice movement in order to re-member, to discern what is natural and what is peculiar, what is necessary and what isn’t. Easiness and functional movement come with less ambition, less imposition, less fear. Meeting the other with fresh, curious eyes allows trust, breath, presence in the development of our dance stories.

In our class:

• We study tools from CI/hands-on work and meditative movement based on Suprapto’s Suryodarmo work (Amerta Movement) and Vipassana in order to enhance our sensorial skills of perception that allow our inner resources, our emotional being, our fantasy, our instinct, to be revealed.
• Navigating time, space, energy factors through slow dances, we sense and feel more before acting to connect within first. Learning how to let go, open the gate to our resources of expressive motion.
• Connecting with our inner movement, our physical form becomes more clear as we make choices while dancing. Touching our quiet, safe space within, we experience flow and presence in stillness and in movement.
• We become more aware of space, the way we touch and connect with the others; how do we touch with our mind, our attention, our senses. How can we dance from our authentic self?
• We practice mirroring of ourselves while dancing developing a platform of trust and acceptance as we share the expression of our being.
• Defining our limits more clearly, we create passages of communication with inspiration and fulfilment.

Sharing our experience is an important part of our group work.

Biography

Christina Klissiouni (Greece) is an international dance teacher acknowledged by CI community, performer, choreographer and body psychotherapist. In her dance classes, she combines her profound experience and exploration as a teacher/performer on CI skills/practice with her long practice and knowledge working as a body movement psychotherapist, Gestalt therapist and zen shiatsu practitioner.

She is a pioneer of CI/Somatic approach to movement/dance in Greece, training professional dancers as well as non-professional movers who became interested in an alternative approach to connecting with their physicality with more awareness. Her work is a 35 year-long exploration of movement/dance study based on Somatics & CI. She started her practice in CI in 1987 studying with the first generation of teachers in NYC (1986-90). Besides her training as a contemporary dancer (Merce Cunningham technique), very early on in her studies, she started exploring BMC, Alexander technique, Yoga, Authentic movement, Kinetic awareness, Skinner releasing and other practices that deeply informed her dance practice based on experiential anatomy. Improvisation has always been the foundation of her work. She runs her studio Present Body in the center of Athens since 2009, teaches and performs in numerous festivals/venues in Europe, USA, Asia cultivating “contact” based on awareness, on all levels.
She has co-taught intensive workshops and/or performances with Nita Little, Ray Chung, Ka Rustler, Mary Prestidge, Nien Mari Chatz, Angela Doniy, Shahar Dor, Saliq Savage and many others. She has been deeply influenced by the teachings of master teacher of contemplative movement- ritualistic performance and awareness practice based on Vipassana meditation and improvisation-Suprapto Syryodarmo from Indonesia.

In the last 3years, she has taught intensive workshops at Freiburg CI festival, at Israeli CI festival, Grenoble festival, CI festival in Amelia-Italy, in Nantes, in London, in Tubingen, in Heidelberg and many other places.

As a Body/Gestalt psychotherapist, she is a member of the European Association of Body Psychotherapists (EABP) and offers private as well as group sessions regularly, parallel to her long work as a CI/Improvisation teacher.  (www.presentbody.com)

The Fluid Body, Meeting in Flow

Experiential CI/Improvisation workshop next to the blue sea at Chania city, in Crete. A dance and somatic summer time in touch with nature!

1st of Nov. - Hours: 13.00-18.00 &

2nd of Nov - Hours: 10.30-15.30

by Christina Klissiouni at  studio  OXO NOU

For dancers, contacters, amateurs of movement with some experience.

An intensive workshop that creates space for personal and group experiential work based on interdisciplinary somatic practices, for encounter, exchange and sharing. An opportunity to explore your awareness and love for movement at an inspiring environment that brings nature close to Greek culture and history.

In these 5 days we explore Contact Improvisation skills as well as Improvisation skills based on Somatic practices and contemplative movement. We practice awareness listening to our inner impulses, the expression of internal movement pathways that support fluid connectivity. The experiential work allows better possibilities to communicate physically with our partner on the basis of ease, availability and relaxation. Spirals and the interplay of tonality through intentional touch will become our language that supports flow, change and the unexpected in our contact improvised dances.
On the basis of somatic practices such as Body-Mind Centering, Shiatsu and the Alexander technique, using hands-on work and contemplative movement, we bring the attention to sensorial perception; we move our interest to different parts of our bodies through deep sensing and becoming more sensitive to subtle or more sudden shifts of muscle tone. Consequently, the expression of our response, our communication with our partner, becomes more authentic and satisfying.

Thus we practice skills in Contact Improvisation giving emphasis to the sequential and supple pouring of weight aiming towards an elastic, soft and strong body that can easily respond to contact with sensitivity and awareness; we explore the challenge of ‘containing’ fluidity so that we are able to counterbalance the forces that we meet. Falling and flying can occur safely, with support. We constantly look for ways of maintaining our released state and alertness in moments of surprise and the unknown. Through specific exercises, we learn how to find connectivity in our own body and permeability in the connection with other bodies. We inform qualities of movement, various dynamics, accessing our muscular-skeletal systems in relation to connective tissue, the fluids and fascia.

“Meeting” the forces arising from being in contact with another moving body skillfully, creates delightful, inspiring compositions in the moment. We meet space, time, any playful shifts of rhythmical and energy states cultivating presence through enhanced attention in order to engage fully in our dances.

In the workshop we also explore Authentic movement practice that supports inner movement and trust; the development of solo material reflects our state of being and gives meaning to our dance. Scores of improvisation open our selves to playfulness, spontaneity and communication in solo, duet and group formations.

An important part of our practice is how to give feedback enriching our experience on a conscious level.

Cost: 80 euro + 23% tax.
If the workshop is prepaid until Oct. 25th the price is 70 euro + 23% tax.

Contact Improvisation workshop

“Lifting up & through”
a state of being, a tool of support, with Christina Klissiouni (Athens - Thessalonika)

May 19th , 20th 2012
10:00 - 15:30
at Present Body Studio (Center of Somatic Movement & Performance Research)
Artistic Director: Christina Klissiouni
16, Eressou Str., 10680, Exarchia, Athens
&
June 1st, 2nd , 3rd 2012
10:00 - 15:30
at  Studio _A4M (performing arts group)
30, Olympiou Diamanti Str., Thessaloniki

Dance explores some of the physical possibilities.
Dance refocuses our focusing mind on very basic existence;
time, space, gravity, open up to creativity.
This seems to me a reminder of nature, of our natures,
and as such it provides a service to us in our physical doldrums.
It is a wake up call to deadened urbanites,
a stimulus, to work-habituated bodies,
a promise to developing children...
                                         Steve Paxton

Subject:  In this workshop we focus on “lifts” as a state of being, as a tool of support using the resistance of the floor as we play with gravity and levity.  Starting from flying low on our own as well as in contact with another partner, we encourage suspension and balance in moving support.  We explore CI skills such as rolling, spiralling, falling, jumping, catching, leverage to rise up, counter balancing as we play with weight and momentum.  In the practice of CI we emphasize on listening through the senses and particularly, through touch, exploring the unknown and the responses that arise when the body is in a state of active attention, inner expansion and presence. Becoming aware of the oscillations and the inner pulsations that become pathways of energy and deploy into movement, we experience fluidity, musicality and flow.  We are interested in breaking habits as we cultivate trust and safety in the process where movement unfolds itself naturally and efficiently. We improvise opening up our curiosity, our instinct and our physical intelligence to find pleasure in communication and physicality. Our dance contains the expression of infinite possibilities and reflects our choices, mirroring our fantasy, our skills and our sensibility, as it forms the story in the present moment.
During the class we use hands-on-work and active visualization from anatomy to prepare our body in meeting the floor and the other dancers in a soft and an actively relaxed state.  At the end of the class we use scores of improvisation to practice our performance skills with CI.

For participation, an active knowledge of CI is necessary.

Intention, Form, & Emptiness:
”Contact Improvisation as a Holistic Well-being and Depth Practice”

with Joe Stoller και Lindsay Sworski (USA, Boulder Colorado)
Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th of October 2011
10:00 am-3:30 pm

Contact improvisation offers us a profound context for mindful and embodied relating to another. Sometimes within the openness of contact improvisation a great depth is realized and sometimes it is lost in a sea of unclear intentions and lack of structure.  Sometimes the mutual embodiment of CI is physically nourishing, integrating, and sustainable - and sometimes it is subtly taxing or leads to injury.  In this CI retreat we will come together to explore the amazing potential for physical, psychological and spiritual growth and restoration through contact and improvisation. Looking at well-being and growth as dynamic processes of differentiation, integration and balance, we will use the interplay of structure and openness to go deep and feel good. The radical social paradigm of non-hierarchical embodied relating offered by contact improvisation will be combined with the more differentiating and intentional elements of bodywork and Authentic Movement, generating potent containers for both personal and collective benefit, as dancers and as humans.

Joe Stoller discovered and became fascinated with Contact Improvisation in 1998.  He has since taught, researched and performed CI in Europe, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Argentina. This included a year of work supported by a Watson Fellowship, which took him to13 countries around the world to study differences between CI practices in relationship to local cultural contexts. He has taught in a range of settings including, Universities, Dance festivals, tiny little studios, and a high school. More and more, his dancing and teaching blend with his work as a massage therapist, and extensive practice of Qigong and somatic education. He currently lives in Boulder, CO, USA, dancing with the Tumblebones Dance Collective and exploring new forms blending bodywork, Authentic Movement and CI with focus groups. He believes that CI, its edges and its children offer profound contexts for somatic inquiry, nourishment, development, and sharing authenticity.

Lindsay Sworski brings together her in-depth study of Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, psychotherapy, bodywork, creative process, and spiritual development in her workshops and classes.  She teaches a hybrid blend of these disciplines internationally and is honored to have the chance to invite people to connect deeply with themselves, their bodies, each other, and the present moment.  She is one of the Core organizing members of the thriving Boulder Contact Lab, where she facilitates community growth and depth in dancing, and she danced and studied for many years with the Lower Left Performance Collective.  She is trained in the Hakomi Method of Experiential Psychotherapy and is an ongoing member of the Ridhwan School of Inner Work.  She is grateful to the lineage of depth-divers before her who have paved the way for her offerings.  Learn more at www.MovingPresence.com.
